Data from 3240 individuals (aged 55 to 95 years) from a community-dwelling cohort of older individuals in Sweeden were analysed; 2490 were randomly selected, and 1050 had diabetes. The main outcome measures were the prevalence and mortality of MI up until January 2014. The risk of an incident MI increased gradually throughout the age spectrum, with highly significant trends up to 80 years. Diabetes was not a risk factor for MI up until 65 years, but after that, MI dramatically increased in diabetic individuals. HRs for incident MI were 1.93 (95% CI 1.27-2.95, P = 0.002) in men and 3.03 (1.69-5.43, P < 0.001) in women aged 75 years or more. In total, 16% of men and 21% of women with diabetes before the age of 65 years had a first MI compared with 34% of men and 41% of women with diabetes, respectively, after the age of 65 years. It is concluded that the age interaction between the risk of an MI and diabetes is highly relevant to primary and secondary prevention strategies in people with diabetes of different ages. d2c66b5586
